We have just returned from our 4th visit to the Maldives & this time we went to Komandoo, a smaller, adult only island still within the Crown & Champa Group,500 x 200 metres in the Lhaviyani Atoll. We arrived by sea plane, a scenic 40 minute journey from Male to the beating of drums and a welcoming song, to then be sat down in comfy loungers with a coconut drink in one hand, an amazingly delicious coconut ice cream and an ice cold scented flannel in the other. This was to set the tone throughout our stay as we were treated in true Maldivean style to exceptional hospitality from Management and the friendliest staff who just cannot do enough to make your time on Komandoo very, very special.

This is a very pretty, charming & intimate island with a different vibe. Only 65 villas with 130 guests at any one time and around 130 150 staff (allowing for long staff holidays) so almost a one to one service. The beach is stunning and well maintained and goes almost right around the island. There are dedicated sweepers and gardeners who carefully sweep the beach and paths and tend to the garden areas thoughout each day. The island is also fogged each evening to keep the mosquitoes at bay and it works too. I only got bitten once which is a first for me.

The infinity pool has a stunning view of the ocean and is kept immaculate and has very comfortable sun loungers all around. Check it out on the live Komandoo web cam.

The villas are beautiful, light and spacious. A couple of steps down and you are on the sand, just a few feet more and you are in the ocean. The land villas have plenty of lush vegetation and greenery separating each villa so that there is a complete feeling of privacy of having your very own piece of paradise. I did get to see the Water Villas and they are very beautiful although not for us as I get motion sickness, although the people we met loved them.

The reef is easy accessible from the shallow lagoon all around the island and you can see people snorkelling in all weathers. I have a fear of the sea but with the help from a lovely couple I met, I got to snorkel with the turtles which have made the lagoon their home, a wonderful experience.

The main restaurant is set out very well, with cooking stations manned by chefs who will prepare your fish, meat or pasta to your liking with the cheeriest of smiles. Each section of the beautifully set out buffet offers plenty of choice and the puddings and desserts are to die for. You have a dedicated waiter who will attend to your every need and you can sit wherever you like. There is a large decking area outside over the water if you choose to sit out under the stars, we felt positively pampered. No wonder Komandoo has been given an award for the 5th most romantic Resort in the world. The mix of clientele may I add are made up of mainly Europeans, Brits, Germans and a sprinkling of Asians, honeymooners of all ages, and lots of people like us celebrating a special Anniversary. The one thing we all had in common was a smile on our face and a look of complete satisfaction that all was right, at least while we were here on this lovely island.

We ate at the Aqua a la Carte over the water restaurant one evening. The new Executive Chef Warren very kindly treated us to try out his new 7 course tasting menu, which was absolutely exquisite and so beautifully presented. He has plans and ideas which could take this place to a new level and one that will provide a very special dining experience.

There are two bars, the Kandu bar which is open from early until late, with low slung very comfortable chairs around the bar and plenty of seating inside and outside on the lovely decking area. The lighting creates a very special ambience and is accommodating for those who want to socialise and dance to the low key music and also for couples who want to be on their own under the stars. The entertainment is just right with a jazz trio on some of the nights and a sax player on others. My favourite has to be the Maldivian night where the staff put on an amazing show.......singing, playing the drums and dancing ....the likes of which I have never seen before, this was a real treat.

I have to mention that the choice of wonderful cocktails and mocktails is vast and each one made expertly by the best team of bar staff ever. I apologise for going on but these guys are not just doing their job they are actually giving you a genuine heartfelt service with some of the biggest smiles on the planet.
The Thundi bar or Sunset bar is open from around 10.30 until sunset and closes around 7.30. There are plenty of very nice loungers under coconut brollies to relax in and enjoy the breezes as well as seating at the bar, if you want to stop off for a drink after snorkelling or a walk around the island. On one of the days we were stuck here for almost 4 hours during one of the heaviest of storms but had so much fun being entertained by the young barman on duty that day, we didn't care.

The weather was very changeable when we were there which was to be expected at this time of year but it did not put a dampener on anyone 's spirits. Everyone we met didn't want to go home and like us were very sad when the time came to leave. I guess there are times in life when you sit down, take a deep breath and feel something approaching an easy contentment. You look out at the ocean, listen to the bird song, watch the bats flying high overhead in the trees, see a sunrise or two, watch a magnificent sunset and get to feel the warmth of the sun in the most friendliest of places. This is what we will be remembering and talking about until we manage to save enough Komandoo tokens to go back some time in the near future.

I think Komandoo has got a piece of your heart Ann & Forbes.
It is a very popular island with repeat guests so they must be doing something right for sure. 65 villas is a nice number for room density for the size of the island and having stayed in other Maldives resorts with such low room density really does bring a Maldivian holiday from a great one to very special one in my opinion Smile

Thanks for taking the time to tell us about your wonderful stay.

Casey Cool

We visited Komandoo on a day trip from Kuredu quite a few years ago now, but we still remember how beautiful and pristine the island was.

We fancy a change next time we go to the Maldives as we have been to Vilamendhoo (which we loved) the last two visits. We had thought about returning to Meeru, but the new water sports have put us off that idea.

Komandoo is now top of the list, as hubby has wanted to stay there since we first saw it, thanks for sharing your experience of the Island Smile

What a lovely report, really makes you want to visit!

Maybe one day when we have the children off our hands, our youngest is only 10, but the day will come....
