Day One

I love both the trip and live reports from Meeru so thought it was time to give something back.

We emailed Meeru a few weeks ago to ask for a room in the 400’s as we’d booked a beach villa and to book our wedding vow renewal.

The renewal was all booked and they said they’d try and meet our request for a room in the low 400’s but no guarantee.

We got our registration forms when we arrived at Male yesterday and I was a bit disappointed that there was no indication of the room number on the form.

After an uneventful boat trip we arrived at Meeru at 11.30 to sunshine and someone waiting at the end of the jetty with a board with our name on. We were escorted to a table outside the Kakuni given a cold towel and a refreshing drink in a coconut.

I was then handed the voucher for the free 15 minute spa treatment and thought to myself that he had given me the wrong voucher because the room number was 527. I then took a sneaky peek at the registration form which was sat on the table and saw that 527 was also written on that. Meanwhile, tubby hubby was sitting there staring at the key which also said 527. OMG, we were then told that we had been upgraded to a water villa for our entire stay, 21 nights. Wow we just couldn’t believe it, how exciting.

When we got to the room, a lovely welcome card had been left for us together with a fruit platter. I immediately went out to the decking and very carefully walked down the steps to test the water. I knew the steps would be slippery as HelenPea had slipped and fallen down them herself a few years ago. So I held on to both hand rails, gingerly stepping down one step at a time and got to the last but one step slipped and fell into the water, still in a standing position and holding onto the handrails. Consequently, my linen trousers were soaked up to my knees (with no sign of the suitcases yet) and both my arms started to bruise.

The rest of the day was fairly uneventful. We went to lunch and were told that Hassan would be our waiter, we requested him in the past but not this time as we were expecting to eat in the Favi. Hassan has gone home for the week but he’ll be back by next week.

Tubby hubby managed to leave the key on the table and didn’t realise until we got to the Dhoni bar for a drink, he loses the room key on almost every holiday we go on but it does normally take more than a couple of hours! He sat sunning himself with a glass of rose at the Dhoni while I went back for the key.

We had a walk around the island stopped off for a drink or two at a couple of the bars and then back to the room for a sleep before the welcome meeting. We don’t usually go to the welcome meetings but Angelo the rep seemed really nice so we thought we’d go and he actually thanked us afterwards and said he hadn’t expected to see us as we’re repeat guests.

We had a lovely meal at the Maalan and then a couple of drinks then off to bed ad we were both really tired. Haven’t caught up with Yovan yet but hopefully we’ll see him today.

It’s lovely to be able to type this up on our decking while watching the sun rise.

Hi Ellen & Keith,

How good is that getting upgraded! I told you to watch those steps - but would you listen Laughing Hope you are not too bruised for the vow renewal ceremony. Don't give those bars too much stick since we are not there to keep you in check. So sorry that we can't be with you after all owing to circumstances, but who knows - one day we might take up our usual seats in the Uthuru again.

Enjoy the rest of you extra long hols and keep the reports coming Very Happy

I didn’t hurt myself too much slipping on the steps, just some bruising on both arms but it matches the bruising on my legs from bumping into the table. I also got bitten or stung yesterday while sunbathing. Something attacked me, I didn’t see what it was but it bloody hurt and started to swell almost immediately. Tubby Hubby immediately went into paramedic mode and covered it in antibacterial hand gel…… I feel so much better now.

Well we’re into a routine already, up early for breakfast then a walk around the island, back to the room to either sunbathe, snorkel or sleep depending on the weather. We’re going to the gym at lunch time instead of the restaurant; the food is just too good to eat 3 meals a day. Afternoon tea at the Uthuru is very pleasant especially if you have the rose wine with the sandwich instead of the tea.

Yesterday was sunny all morning but clouded over in the afternoon, this morning we had dark clouds and rain but it cleared up by lunch time.

There’s quite a strong current around by the water villa’s at the moment, I don’t know if this is because there is a change in the tides due to the full moon tomorrow night or just the time of year, maybe HJ can shed some light on that.

The island feels half empty but they are still offering free cruises.

I also had a close encounter with a sting ray this afternoon. We must have frightened him almost as much as he frightened me as I hadn’t seen him and he was about 2ft away when he started to swim off waving his tail in my direction.

@helenpea – we’ve already taken up the usual spot and had a toast to you and Glenn.

We’ve been to the repeaters party, Tubby Hubby mentioned to Moosa that we hadn’t received our T=Shirts yet and as quick as a flash Moosa suggested it might be a size issue….. I’m liking him more and more he is so funny.

We’re really missing Yovan and Waseem, it’s not the same without them and the service certainly isn’t as good, although Nassi is lovely and very good albeit a bit shy at first.

Helen

I was told that Waseem had moved to Male and taken up a new job to be closer to his family

Yovan has gone home for a holiday and Waseem has started his own business (textiles I think)

Well the weather turned yesterday…… no ore grey clouds just wall to wall sunshine. It’s raining really heavily at night but yesterday was really hot and today looks set for more of the same.

They’re really pushing the cruises at the moment, we had a leaflet on Friday and a phone call last night. Unfortunately the next one is on the 13th which is the day we renew our vows so we can’t do that one but hopefully there’ll be another chance.

This question will probably make me sound like an old lush but is the rose wine still the really nice sweet fruity one that we had in Jan this year? It's like a Zinfandel blush and soooooo easy to drink - I loved it and am looking forward to sampling more of the same in a couple of weeks time Very Happy

Hope you have a great day today for your vow renewal Very Happy

Quick update.

It was a full moon on Saturday and it was also an eclipse, I’ve never seen an eclipse of the moon so that was nice to see.

The weather has been really good, very sunny and so hot. It is raining quite a lot at night though but we can live with that.

Thanks to all those who sent their good wishes for the vow renewal. It couldn’t have gone any better, lovely weather and Tubby Hubby didn’t drop me when getting into the boat. He wore a sarong and did pull it up and tuck it into his belt before lifting me up and that made everyone laugh. I’m looking forward to seeing the photos.

We’re due to eat at Hot Rocks in a couple of hours but it’s pouring down at the moment so I don’t know if that will go ahead.

AlisonD - The rose wine is lovely, it’s a fruity south African but I was a bit surprised to see it come out of a carton Shocked

Congratulations!

The pics you sent were lovely, looking forward to seeing the rest. Luckily the sun was shining then for you, I hope it clears up so your meal can go ahead.

Very Happy
